Unveiling Truth In Sudan

“But whenever anyone turns to the LORD, the veil is taken away.”
2 Corinthians 3:16

Darkness is more than simply the absence of light.  In many countries, darkness is a personal force, advancing and expanding until millions have fallen under its influence.  And in Sudan, where Islam has blinded the eyes of all but a few, darkness in 2009 has fallen like a veil in the form of suffering, hopelessness, and despair.

Into this darkness, God has called for the gospel to be sent, and thanks to the sacrifice of believers like you who have prayerfully given to missions, Dick and Jennifer Brogden have been faithfully serving in Sudan for years. This winter, I will be entering Sudan as an approved Missionary Associate to work alongside the Brogdens.  Specifically, I will be ministering to Sudanese women, who live under a veil that is as spiritual as it is physical.  The purpose of this letter is to ask for your support in this God-ordained task.

Jesus said in Matthew 26:52 that “those who live by the sword, die by the sword.”  In Sudan, the word SWORD provides a tragic and useful acronym for describing everyday life.

Starvation and sickness: For decades, but especially since 2003 (when militants began to systematically carry out brutal attacks against innocent civilians), death by starvation and sickness has become a fact of life for war-torn Sudan.  Many of the dying are children and young people, and worse yet, most if not all are dying without Christ.

War: The complexities of the current Sudan conflict cause many of us in the West to ignore the violence and genocide occurring in this nation, but make no mistake: war in Sudan is real.  From the youngest orphans to the frailest elderly, many Sudanese have known nothing in their lives apart from the fear, horror, and pain that war invariably brings.

Oppression: To say that women are “marginalized” in Sudan, sadly, is an understatement.  Under Islamic law, women and others considered second-class are regularly judged, abused, and even stoned to death for minor violations of religious tradition (note the case of the Western female journalist this year who was sentenced to be flogged for wearing pants in public).  The veil worn by Sudanese women is more than a cultural accessory; it is a reminder of the darkness under which they are daily sentenced to live.

Rape: Though not widely discussed in Western media, rape is commonly used by Sudanese militias as a weapon to terrorize individual women and girls, as well as whole families and communities.  These victims are left physically traumatized and spiritually broken, adding to their desperate emptiness.

Displacement: The forced relocation of over a million people is not just a footnote of the conflict in Sudan.  Most of the suffering who crowd into squalid refugee camps, hoping to find food and safety, find little of either.  Since 2003, over 500,000 refugees have died far from their homes and even farther from hope.

What is the answer to this darkness? The only answer is Jesus Christ, who came that all who believe on Him might have abundant, everlasting life.  For those who live “under the veil”—the women of Sudan and those of their families—the only hope of salvation from Islam’s oppressive darkness is a saving relationship with a loving God.  I am asking for your support, that these women might experience freedom.  With your help, we can together lift the veil, and minister hope through the wonderful truth of the gospel.

Thank you in advance for responding to the call,

In Christ’s Service,

Lori Chambers
